This month, we'll be learning from my new friend Joshua Mallard, an award-winning composer whose work spans video games, film, and contemporary classical music.
If you're not familiar with Joshua and his work yet, then please allow me to give him a proper introduction! Joshua is currently the Senior Composer for Dead as Disco at Brain Jar Games (which is an AWESOME looking game, by the way!), and his game credits are both varied and impressive, including Blood Line: A Rebel Moon Game, Sirocco, LORT, and Beyond Blue: After the Storm.
One thing that also makes me especially excited to talk with Joshua is that, in addition to working professionally as a game composer, he serves as a Lecturer of Game Audio at Penn State University. He's passionate about mentoring the next generation of game composers while continuing to work in the industry, and that's a career path I've chosen for myself as well.
Here's what makes this masterclass especially compelling, though:
Joshua represents something I believe every aspiring game composer should strive for: the ability to combine strong musical craftsmanship with a deep understanding of game audio as a whole. Writing great music is incredibly important, but understanding how that music is implemented, how it interacts with sound design, and how it ultimately supports the player's experience is just as essential. From writing adaptive music with middleware such as Wwise to working in sound design and collaborating with teams like Blip Sounds, Joshua has developed a holistic understanding of game audio that extends well beyond composition alone. The more we understand games and the role audio plays within them, the better equipped we'll be to create meaningful interactive experiences.
Whether you're just beginning your journey into game audio or already working on your own projects, I hope you'll join us for what promises to be another fantastic Composer's Apprentice Masterclass. And if you do, be sure to come ready with lots of great questions!

Virtual Orchestration
Refine your sound with excellent-sounding orchestral production quality. Utilize MIDI programming, mixing, and other audio production techniques to craft a stunning mix and stand out from the crowd.

Synth Design
Many Hollywood composers outsource this essential component of a score's timbral palette. Build custom synthesizer patches to give your music a modern, cinematic edge completely unique to you.
Virtual Orchestration
Composers have always needed lateral skills to succeed. One of these skills is Virtual Orchestration and Audio Production. Of two otherwise equal composers, the one with better production will always get the gig.
