Topics:         Mixing Like the Pros: What Every Media Composer Should Know

This month, we'll be learning from my friend John Whynot, an award-winning film score mixer, producer, engineer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist whose career spans more than four decades across film, television, and popular music.

If you're not familiar with John and his work yet, then please allow me to give him a proper introduction! John's first major feature film score credit was mixing The Last of the Mohicans, which went on to win the Academy Award for Best Sound (not a bad way to start!). Since then, he's collaborated with renowned composers including Trevor Jones, Mychael Danna, Jeff Danna, and John Debney, contributing to films such as Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, Ronin, Stigmata, and The Breadwinner. Beyond film, John has also enjoyed a Grammy- and Juno-winning career producing and engineering records for artists including Dave Matthews, Lucinda Williams, and Loreena McKennitt. Today, he also serves as an Associate Professor at Berklee College of Music, where he teaches music production and film scoring, mentoring the next generation of composers and audio professionals.

For me, what makes this masterclass especially exciting is that we'll be learning from someone whose expertise extends beyond composition and into one of the most essential aspects of modern media music: mixing! One of the biggest lessons I've learned is that writing great music is only half the battle. In many cases, the quality of your production can be just as important, if not more important than the composition itself. Of two composers, the one with stronger production and mixing skills will often win the gig! Knowing how to shape your sound can be the difference between an amateur track and a professional score.

So whether you're an up-and-coming composer or a seasoned veteran, I'm incredibly excited to learn from John's decades of experience, and I hope you'll join us for what promises to be another fantastic Composer's Apprentice Masterclass!

Synth Design

Many Hollywood composers outsource this essential component of a score's timbral palette. Build custom synthesizer patches to give your music a modern, cinematic edge completely unique to you.

Virtual Orchestration

Composers have always needed lateral skills to succeed. One of these skills is Virtual Orchestration and Audio Production. Of two  otherwise equal composers, the one with better production will always get the gig.
